To obtain your Restricted Operator Certificare (Maritime (ROC(M)), you must pass an exam consisting of two parts:

      1. A 60 question multiple choice exam on which you must obtain 70% (42 correct answers), and

      2. A verbal exam during which you must demonstrate:

        • competency in using the phonetic alphabet and

        • the ability to make a Distress (MAYDAY), Urgency (PAN PAN), or Safety (SECURITE) radio call.

You must know the Phonetic Alphabet as part of the oral exam. Begin by practicing your name, your boat name, signs you see, licence plates etc. This will be on the exam and you will be required to have 100% accuracy.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) requires that the exam is given by a qualified examiner. Please contact your assigned Examiner to arrange a date and location for your exam. The exam may be given on-line using Skype or similar service during the current Covid-19 crisis.

Upon successful completion of the exam you will be issued a temporary certificate. The official ROC(M) card will be mailed to you from the CPS-ECP National Office, usually within 60 days.
