NO EVENTS SCHEDULED FOR 2026

Due to the discontinued funding from Transport Canada, CanBoat, despite ongoing support from CIL Orion, will be unable to offer a flare disposal program this year.

As a non-profit organization, CanBoat relies on external funding to deliver this national safety initiative and does not have the financial capacity to operate the program independently.

We encourage boaters and marine retailers to contact their Members of Parliament to express the importance of this program and support the renewal of Transport Canada funding.

CHECK YOUR FLARES

Do you have expired marine flares?

Flares manufactured in 2022 or earlier expire this year, as Transport Canada approves them for four years. They should be replaced every third or fourth boating season.

To dispose of expired flares, do not light them, throw them overboard, or add them to household garbage.

Don’t put them in household garbage

Flares are not permitted in regular trash or at household hazardous waste facilities due to their potential explosion and fire hazards.

Don’t ignite them

Flares are only for emergencies and lighting them in non-distress situations, like decommissioning, is illegal.

Don’t throw them in the water

Marine flares contain toxic chemicals, which can pollute waterways and drinking water sources.

38,863 Flares Collected In 2025

With disposal costs funded by our CPS Foundation and CIL, CanBoat volunteers hosted 27 events and collected 38,863 expired flares in 2025!

In the past, Transport Canada acknowledged the need for boaters to safely dispose of flares and funded our educational flare collection events.
