When Should a Boat's Mechanical Condition Be Checked?

You should check your boat’s mechanical condition at the start of each boating season and before every trip. According to Transport Canada, mechanical failure accounts for more than 50% of reported incidents to authorities and knowingly operating an unseaworthy vessel is a criminal offence under Canadian law. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent breakdowns and keep you and your passengers safer on the water.

The following are general guidelines. Always consult your owner’s manual for manufacturer recommendations and procedures specific to your boat.

Start-of-Season Maintenance Checklist

Fuel System

☐ Inspect fuel hoses, connections and tank surfaces for leaks, cracks or damage.
☐ Replace damaged or worn components as needed.
☐ Check that all fittings and clamps are secure.
☐ Ensure the engine, exhaust and ventilation systems are functioning properly.

Belts, Cables & Hoses

☐ Check belts and hoses for cracks, brittleness or signs of wear.
☐ Ensure belts are properly tensioned and secure.
☐ Inspect control cables for cracks, swelling or damage to the outer jacket.

Electrical System

☐ Inspect electrical connections for cleanliness, corrosion and tightness.
☐ Clean corroded terminals with a wire brush and clean cable ends.
☐ Check the battery and confirm it holds a charge; replace if necessary.
☐ Have electrical systems inspected regularly by a qualified technician.

Fluid Levels

☐ Check engine oil, power steering, power trim and coolant levels.
☐ Change the engine oil, oil filter and drive lubricants if they were not changed before winterizing.

Propeller & Hull

☐ Inspect the propeller for dings, pitting, cracks or distortion.
☐ Ensure the propeller is securely fastened and replace bearings if needed.
☐ Inspect the hull for blisters, distortion and cracks.
☐ Clean the hull, deck and topsides.
☐ Ensure the drain plug is securely in place before every launch.

Pre-Departure Maintenance Checks

☐ Confirm navigation lights, horn and other required equipment are working.
☐ Check fuel levels and ensure the fuel system is free of leaks.
☐ Confirm the battery is connected and switches are in the correct position.
☐ Make sure the bilge is dry and the bilge pump is working.
☐ Remove winter covers, supports and any transport straps or blocks.
☐ Double-check that the drain plug is installed before launching.
☐ After launching, check for leaks and confirm the engine starts and runs properly.

Trailer Maintenance Checklist

☐ Check nuts and bolts securing rollers and adjustable couplings.
☐ Inspect safety chains for wear, damage or distortion.
☐ Check that all trailer lights are working properly.
☐ Check tire pressure and inflate to the manufacturer’s recommended level.
☐ Inspect wheel bearings before winter storage.
☐ If wheel bearings have been submerged, repack them with grease.

☐ Keep bilges clean—never discharge oily water overboard.
☐ Use bilge-absorbent pads for oil and fuel.
☐ Bring garbage ashore—never litter.
