Basic Navigation + Boat Handling - V2024_06 - Online
Suggested Prerequisite Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
Details The updated course includes traditional and electronic navigation - navigating with paper charts and electronic devices (example, a chart plotter and app-based software). Boat handling subjects include operator and crew responsibilities, handling emergencies, anchoring techniques, docking and undocking techniques, marine weather, collision avoidance rules, and tide and current tables. Self-marking quizzes and charting exercises allow participants to practice and test what they learn. Each section includes printable course notes, instructional videos, skill-testing quizzes, practice exercises, links to supplementary resources, and an optional final exam. An electronic navigation device is required to participate in this course. Participants must complete the cruise exercises with a chartplotter or tablet/phone navigation app. You can use your existing device. If you do not have a device, details to purchase and download one are provided in the course; these start at $14.00. One online meeting per week will combine lecture and question-and-answer format. You may also request one-on-one sessions with a tutor. Note: The course is offered as a single 12- 13-week course or two shorter courses, a Basic Navigation course (8 weeks) and a Boat Handling course (7 weeks). The course listings provide details on the individual Squadron offerings.
